9 Days Primate Safaris in Rwanda Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KIGALI
On arrival at the airport, you will be received by the company representative who will transfer you to Kigali Serena Hotel, Flame Tree Village, or Garr Hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 2: TRANSFER TO AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
In the morning, you will set off to a scenic drive to Akagera National Park, arriving early for lunch at Akagera Game Lodge. After lunch, go for an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Expect to see hippos, crocodiles, and water birds. Dinner and overnight will be at Rusizi Tented Camp (luxury) or at Akagera Game Lodge (deluxe).
DAY 3: MORNING GAME DRIVE AND AFTERNOON BOAT CRUISE
In the early morning, you will go for game drives up to the northern part of the park to catch up with early risers before they go into hiding. You will have chance to see lions, antelopes, giraffes, and bush bucks, among others. Return to the hotel for relaxation by 11:00 a.m. and then have lunch.
After lunch, go for an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you will be rewarded with a view of game, such as as hippos and crocodiles, as well as a variety of bird species. Dinner and overnight will be at Rusizi Tented Camp (luxury) or Akagera Game Lodge (deluxe).
DAY 4: TRANSFER TO NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
In the morning, you will set off for a long drive to Nyungwe National Park. You will have an en-route stopover in Nyanza museum and Butare museum, areas good for photography and adventure, followed by lunch.
Reach Nyungwe in the evening for dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Forest Lodge, Nyungwe Top View Lodge, or Gisakura Hotel. As an alternative, you may opt to track chimps in Kibale Forest National Park where there are over 98% chances of seeing them.
DAY 5: CHIMPANZEE TRACKING
In the morning, you will set off to the forest for a chimpanzee tracking adventure. Canopy Walk, or nature walk is a highlight in itself, in which you will meet different monkey and bird species.
DAY 6: TRANSFER TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
In the early morning, enjoy a spectacular drive to Volcanoes National Park, with stopovers for photography and lunch. Reach Volcanoes National Park in the evening for dinner and overnight stay at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, La Palme Hotel, or Muhabura Hotel.
DAY 7: GORILLA TRACKING
In the morning, you will go for a pre-tracking briefing at the park headquarters. Gorilla tracking may take one to eight hours depending on the group you are part of and the movement of the gentle giants the previous night.
Stay in the presence of the gorillas for a maximum of an hour before exiting the forest. In the afternoon, you may go for nature walks or cultural walk to the Ib’iwachu cultural village. Dinner and overnight stay will be provided.
DAY 8: GOLDEN MONKEY OR DIAN FOSSEY HIKE
This day, you will either go for golden monkey tracking or go for Dian Fossey hike at the Karisoke Research Center, where Dian, an American anthropologist, spent years researching and conserving the gorillas before she was killed and buried next to Digit, a silverback gorilla. On return, you will transfer to Lake Kivu. Relax at the beach and enjoy dinner and an overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Stipp Hotel, or Paradise Malahide.
DAY 9: BOAT CRUISE ON L.KIVU AND TRANSFER TO KIGALI
In the morning, you will enjoy a boat cruise up to the coffee island and have a view of the surrounding islands. On return, set off to Kigali, where you will reach early to have the necessary shopping. You will then check into your hotel or be dropped off to the airport for your departure flight if it is on schedule.
